Montanes suffers 'Nice' defeat

Albert Montanes suffered a shock defeat at the Open de Nice as he crashed out to Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The sixth seed, winner of the Estoril Open 10 days ago where he knocked out Roger Federer, was off colour today as his Ukrainian opponent emerged victorious 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 16 minutes.

Elsewhere, fifth seed Marcos Baghdatis moved past Frenchman Laurent Recouderc 6-4 7-5.

The Cypriot needed just over 90 minutes to beat the 'lucky loser', who had been given a reprieve as a late stand-in for injured Croatian Mario Ancic.

Richard Gasquet beat Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-3 6-0 with the minimum of fuss while Frenchman Florent Serra beat Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko 7-5 7-6.

In second-round action, Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine reached his first ATP Tour quarter-final in seven months, holding off three break points to beat Italian Andreas Seppi 7-5 6-3.
