Paes-Tipsarevic win Chennai Open

Leander Paes and Janko Tipsarevic won the doubles title at the Aircel Chennai Open 2012, defeating Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich 6-4 6-4 on Sunday.

The duo had gone into the final as slight underdogs, since Tipsarevic had finished his marathon singles final against Milos Raonic less than an hour ago.

However, egged on by a partisan crowd and superbly supported by partner Paes, the Serb managed to find enough fuel in the tank to ensure he wouldn't end up losing two finals on the same day.

Things got off to a got start for the Indo-Serb pairing as they broke both their opponents early on to take a 3-0 lead in the first set. However, the Israeli duo of Ram and Erlich, seeded fourth, gradually settled into the match and got a break back in the fourth game, thanks to a Tipsarevic backhand that sailed wide.

The 27-year-old was finding the going tough and his play was punctuated with errors - but the third seeds managed to hold on to the one break and took the first set 6-4.

The teams traded breaks early in the second set and at 4-4, the set seemed to be heading for a tie-break. However, the home favourites managed to find an extra gear at just the right moment, breaking their opponents' one last time in the ninth game.

And it was all over when Erlich and Ram allowed a Paes volley to sail through harmlessly on match point. The 38-year-old Paes had won his sixth Chennai Open title, and his first with Tipsarevic.

Paying tribute to his partner's fitness, the Indian said: "I know how difficult it is mentally to play two finals on the same day. The way he (Tipsarevic) prepared for both the finals, it was impeccable. He epitomises what an athlete should be.

"I wanted him to win the singles and I am glad I could help him end the tournament on a winning note."

Tipsarevic attributed his stamina to some hard work done during the off-season.

"I had a very hard pre-season. I have that every year; fitness in general is one of my strength," he said, before complimenting Paes.

"I love playing with someone who loves to ask me something but also to give something."

The two will now travel to Melbourne to take part in the Australian Open.
