Nadal takes a break from tennis

Newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal will not defend his Mercedes Cup title in Stuttgart this week in order to rest.

The Spaniard, who beat five-time winner Roger Federer in yesterday's epic men's singles final at the All England Club, tweaked his knee during his third-round match against Mikhail Youzhny.

Although it did not stop him going on to claim the title, Nadal has been advised to rest by doctors.

"My doctors have said I need a couple of days' rest,'' said the 22-year-old, who became the first Spaniard to win Wimbledon since Manolo Santana in 1966. "I will now get examined for an exact diagnosis.''

Despite Sunday's exertions, Nadal still made the trek to Stuttgart to tell tournament organisers he would be unable to compete at the claycourt event.

The world number two claimed an historic win over great rival Federer, securing a 6-4 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 6-7 (6/8) 9-7 success after nearly five hours on Centre Court, the longest singles final Wimbledon has seen.
