Gasquet progresses in Stuttgart
Second seed Richard Gasquet moved into the quarter-finals of the Mercedes Cup on Wednesday with a 6-7 (7/9) 6-2 6-2 triumph against Czech qualifier Lukas Rosol.
Gasquet has endured a disappointing season and has not won on tour since Mumbai in September last year, but his chances of lifting the trophy in Stuttgart are good.
Top seed Rafael Nadal withdrew following his epic final win over Roger Federer at Wimbledon, and number three seed Nicolas Almagro was forced to retire from his clash with Germany's Michael Berrer because of a wrist injury.
Berrer, who will next face sixth-seeded Argentine Agustin Calleri, held a 7-5 lead when Almagro conceded.
Gasquet, 22, will be gunning for his first semi-final of the season when he faces unseeded Spaniard Albert Montanes in the last eight.
Two first-round matches which were suspended on Tuesday because of bad light were also completed.
Fifth-seeded Italian Simone Bolelli saw off Germany's Mischa Zverev 6-7 (6/8) 6-4 6-2, and Argentina's Brian Dabul beat Denis Gremelmayr of Germany 6-3 5-7 6-3.
