Rollins among 22 for Team USA
Jimmy Rollins has been named among 22 players who will be considered for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.
Team USA already announced at last month's winter meetings that New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter would be part of manager Davey Johnson's squad.
In addition to Rollins - the 2007 National League MVP - others announced Friday included Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun; Cleveland Indians infielder-outfielder Mark DeRosa; Detroit Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson;
Atlanta Braves infielder Chipper Jones and catcher Brian McCann; San Diego Padres righthander Jake Peavy, Minnesota Twins righthander Joe Nathan; Houston Astros righthander Roy Oswalt; Boston Red Sox infielders Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis; and New York Mets third baseman David Wright and righthander J.J. Putz.
Other picked for the squad were Los Angeles Dodgers righthander Jonathan Broxton; Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitchers Brian Fuentes, John Lackey and Scot Shields; Florida Marlins righthander Matt Lindstrom; Toronto Blue Jays lefthander B.J. Ryan; Cleveland outfielder Grady Sizemore; and Chicago White Sox lefthander Matt Thornton.
"The excitement shown by the players to participate in this event has been incredible," said Paul Seiler, the executive director and chief executive of USA Baseball.
"This is still far from a completed process, but we're thrilled with the commitments to date."
Provisional 45-man rosters will be announced January 19, with final rosters of 28 players set by February 24.
The Team USA roster will report as a squad under Johnson on March 2 in Clearwater, Florida, the spring home of the defending World Series champion Phillies. The Americans' first game in the tournament is March 7 against Canada at Toronto's Rogers Centre.
They play in Pool C along with Venezuela and Italy.
