Cardinals on top after Giants shutout

The St Louis Cardinals moved into a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers at the top of the National League Central Division.

Todd Wellemeyer combined with three others as the Cardinals shutout the San Francisco Giants 5-0.

Wellemeyer (7-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in his longest outing of the season, striking out six in improving to 3-0 lifetime against the Giants.

Ryan Franklin worked a perfect ninth for his 19th save in 20 chances, while Ryan Ludwick had two hits and two RBIs as the Cardinals won for the third time in nine.

At Wrigley Field, Derrek Lee hit a grand slam and a three-run homer for a career-high seven RBIs as the Chicago Cubs beat the Brewers 9-5

Jake Fox and Geovany Soto also had solo shots for the Cubs, while Ryan Dempster (5-5) got his first win since May 30.

In Atlanta, Matt Diaz drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning double as the Braves beat East leading Philadelphia Phillies 5-2.

Diaz had his second straight three-hit game to hand the Braves their fourth consecutive win and drop the Phillies into a tie with idle Florida Marlins for first place in the East.

Elsewhere, Ryan Church singled in the winning run in the 10th as the New York Mets completed a comeback from five runs down to edge out the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-8.

Adam LaRoche hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth to pull the Pirates level after the Mets had taken the lead after trailing 5-0 after three innings.

At Petco Park, Geoff Blum hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs as the Houston Astros beat the San Diego Padres 7-2 in a match delayed for just under an hour in the top of the ninth due to a swarm of bees settling over part of left field.

Finally, Joey Votto hit a two-out single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
