MLB: A-Rod denied in Yankees win

Alex Rodriguez was made to wait another day for his 600th home run.

He did contribute three RBI as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 11-4. The Yankees had production throughout their line-up as every position player picked up at least one hit except Mark Teixeira.

Robinson Cano did what Rodriguez could not, going yard in the seventh, an inning which cost the Indians, who lost starter Mitch Talbot to injury after the second, seven runs.

Carlos Pena batted in all four runs as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2.

Ramon Castro homered twice as the Chicago White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 9-5.

Michael Young went 4-for-4, while David Murphy and Taylor Teagarden both homered to give the Texas Rangers a 7-4 win over the Oakland Athletics.

The Atlanta Braves slipped to a 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Washington Nationals, who had solo shots from Ian Desmond and Adam Dunn.

That allowed the Philadelphia Phillies to trim the gap at the top of the National League Central to 2 1/2 games as they sealed their eighth straight win in dramatic fashion.

Wilson Valdez' walk-off RBI single in the 11th gave the Phillies a 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Oscar Salazar also hit a walk-off RBI single in the ninth to hand the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over NL West rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Anibal Sanchez was at his dominant best as he threw a one-hitter in the Florida Marlins' 5-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Mike Stanton and Ronny Paulino each had two RBI to give Sanchez, who threw a no-hitter against Arizona in 2006 and allowed just three base-runners today, more than enough offence.

The Colorado Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-3 to give Ubaldo Jimenez his 16th win of the season, RA Dickey hurled 8 1/3 shutout innings in the New York Mets' 4-0 win over the St Louis Cardinals and Buck Showalter's first game as manager of the Baltimore Orioles ended with a 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals in 11 innings.
