MLB: Cano leads Yankees past Rays
Robinson Cano's go-ahead home run in the ninth gave the New York Yankees a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
They extended their lead at the top of the American League East to two games.
Cano was one of three Yankees hitters to go long, alongside Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher, but Alex Rodriguez was again forced to wait for number 600 as he went hitless.
Tampa Bay led 3-1 after the fifth before the long ball started to hurt them and starter Matt Garza.
David Ortiz hit a three-run walk-off double to ensure another Boston Red Sox rally against the Detroit Tigers would not fall short.
Ortiz hit a grand slam in the ninth last night but the Sox still lost 6-5. It was a different story tonight as they ran out 5-4 winners.
The Red Sox were 4-0 down heading into the seventh, but Ryan Kalish got his first Major League RBI to help cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the ninth, Phil Coke intentionally walked Kevin Youkilis, which loaded the bases, and paid the price as Ortiz doubled to bring him home behind Darnell McDonald and Jed Lowrie.
Kevin Kouzmanoff's three runs on three hits, including a homer in the third, led the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Kevin Slowey hurled eight shutout innings to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 4-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The Texas Rangers got all the offence they needed from Vladimir Guerrero's fourth-inning two-run homer as they beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-1.
The only support given to Dan Haren, who pitched a complete-game loss on five hits and two walks, came in the shape of Howie Kendrick's solo shot in the seventh.
Pat Burrell hit a two-run go-ahead homer in the eighth to give the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 win over their National League West rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers' run came courtesy of Casey Blake's dinger in the seventh as both starters - Barry Zito for the Giants and Chad Billingsley for the Dodgers - impressed.
That saw the Giants cut the gap at the top of the West to two games as home runs from Mike Stanton and Dan Uggla helped the Florida Marlins to a 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres.
The Philadelphia Phillies were left cursing erratic closer Brad Lidge as he surrendered a three-run homer to Ryan Zimmerman in the ninth to give the Washington Nationals a 7-5 walk-off win.
Leading 5-4 thanks to home runs from Carlos Ruiz and Raul Ibanez, the Phillies tossed the ball to Lidge who duly notched up his fourth blown save of the season.
The St Louis Cardinals got home runs from Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus on the way to an 11-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Bronson Arroyo claimed his 11th win of the season as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Atlanta Braves 5-2. Ryan Hanigan's two RBI led the Reds' offence.
Derreck Lee hit a three-run homer for the Chicago Cubs in the eighth inning to level the scores but Carlos Gonzalez went yard in the ninth to give the Colorado Rockies a 6-5 win, while the New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4.
The Cleveland Indians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1, Kansas City Royals ace Zack Greinke claimed just his seventh win of the season in a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles and eight shutout innings from Wandy Rodriguez gave Houston Astros a 6-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
