Red Sox headline AL All-Star team

This year's Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium will feature plenty of players from the Boston Red Sox.

Four players from the Red Sox were named starters and three more were selected as reserves for the American League All-Star team, released by Major League Baseball on Sunday.

First baseman Kevin Youkilis and second baseman Dustin Pedroia were selected as first-time All-Stars, while outfielder Manny Ramirez and designated hitter David Ortiz also were voted to the team. Ortiz said last week that he will not play due to a wrist injury.

Shortstop Derek Jeter and third baseman Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees were selected, as was Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer. Rodriguez was the top overall vote-getter with more than 3.9 million votes for the game on July 15.

"I said that as soon as they announced the All-Star Game was going to be here, this is one All-Star Game I'd like to participate in," Jeter said. "It's going to be fun. The last year at Yankee Stadium, I think it's more than just an All-Star game. It's like a celebration of Yankee Stadium."

Outfielders Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers and Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners round out the rest of the starters. It will be the first All-Star appearance for Hamilton, who leads the majors with 83 RBI entering Sunday.

Three more Boston players were chosen as closer Jonathan Papelbon, outfielder J.D. Drew and catcher Jason Varitek also made the team. It is the third career selection for Varitek, who was chosen despite a miserable .219 batting average.

Rodriguez said the usual Yankees clubhouse will have a different feel with the amount of Red Sox players on the AL roster.

"It's going to be weird having them in our locker room," Rodriguez said. "But I like the Red Sox. I got a lot of good friends (on that team)."
