Ramirez fails to inspire Dodgers

Manny Ramirez hit into a double play in the ninth inning as the Dodgers suffered a 2-1 defeat by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ramirez, who was acquired from the Boston Red Sox on Thursday in a three-team deal, is expected to bolster a Los Angeles team that ranks in the bottom five in the majors in runs, home runs and slugging percentage.

However, Ramirez and his new team-mates were controlled by Diamondbacks starter Randy Johnson (9-7), who allowed one unearned run and five hits in six innings while striking out six to earn his fifth win in as many starts.

Tony Clark hit a solo home run and Stephen Drew added a RBI double for Arizona, who extended their lead at the top of the National League West to three games over the Dodgers.

At Turner Field, Prince Fielder and Mike Cameron homered and Jeff Suppan tossed seven shutout innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-0 win over the Atlanta Braves. Rickie Weeks, Ryan Braun and Corey Hart each drove in a run for the Brewers, who snapped a five game losing streak.

In St Louis, Joe Mather belted a three-run home run and Ryan Ludwick added a pair of solo blasts as the Cardinals recorded a 6-3 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies. Kyle Lohse (13-3) pitched just over five innings to improve to 2-0 against his former team.

At Wrigley Field, Jeff Karstens tossed six solid innings on his National League debut as the new-look Pittsburgh Pirates cooled off the Chicago Cubs with a 3-0 victory.

In Houston, Mark Loretta belted a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning to lead the Houston Astros to a 7-3 victory over the New York Mets. Kaz Matsui, Carlos Lee and starter Brandon Backe also homered for Houston.

At Nationals Park, Odalis Perez tossed just over seven strong innings to propel the Washington Nationals to a 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Perez (4-8) allowed only allowed a run on a fourth inning groundout and three hits with three walks and five strikeouts to end the Nationals' nine-game skid.

Finally, pinch hitter Eugenio Velez doubled in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to send the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres, while Ubaldo Jimenez won his fourth straight start and Brad Hawpe drove in a pair of runs to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 5-2 victory over the Florida Marlins.
