Mussina dominant against Angels

Mike Mussina threw seven innings as the New York Yankees claimed a 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Wilson Betemit, Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez also homered for the Yankees, who have won just two of their last seven games following a season-high eight-game winning streak.

While the Yankees had one of their better games of the week, the Angels had one of their worst. They fell to 7-2 on a 10-game road trip through Baltimore, Boston and New York. The Angels had their five-game winning streak snapped, and lost for just the third time in 15 games following the All-Star break.

Billy Butler delivered a two-run home run and Esteban German drove in three runs to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 9-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Jim Thome and Paul Konerko hit back-to-back homers in the second inning and Brian Anderson and Jermaine Dye did the same in the eighth for the White Sox (61-48). Butler, who collected three hits, gave the Royals a 4-3 edge in the third frame with his seventh home run of the season. He sent a 2-1 offering from White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (8-10) over the left field wall.

Rookie Evan Longoria had three RBI and homered for the second consecutive night as the Tampa Bay Rays routed the Detroit Tigers 9-3. Longoria and Jason Bartlett had three hits each for the Rays, who are 38-9 in their last 47 home games and maintained a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox atop the American League East.

Jason Bay and Kevin Youkilis connected for home runs to highlight a five-run first inning outburst as the Boston Red Sox rolled over the Oakland A's 12-2 at Fenway Park.

Jeremy Guthrie pitched a masterful four-hitter and former Mariner Adam Jones had three hits and scored twice as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1. David Dellucci had three hits, including a two-run homer, and Paul Byrd won his third straight start as the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1.

AJ Burnett won his third straight start as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Texas Rangers 6-4 in searing heat. Burnett (13-9) allowed four runs and six hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out four. He did so working under sultry conditions as the game-time temperature of 102 degrees marked the hottest start in the majors this season.
