Rivera unavailable with back spasms
Yankees Mariano Rivera was out of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with back spasms.
Rivera said he felt the spasms in the ninth inning on Friday, when he gave up the only run in the Yankees' 1-0 loss to the Angels. He was not needed on Saturday, as New York coasted to an 8-2 victory.
"I felt discomfort, so they decided to shut me down for a day," Rivera said. "I don't think that it's anything I have to be concerned about."
Rivera has converted all 26 of his save opportunities this season, but has allowed runs in his last two appearances in non-save situations. Overall, he is 4-4 with a 1.49 ERA. His last save came on July 25, when he got five outs in a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox.
New York's bullpen faltered in Sunday's 14-9 win , as Edwar Ramirez gave up a grand slam in the eighth inning to Mark Teixeira that erased an 8-5 lead.
However, the Yankees answered with six runs in the bottom of the inning and Jose Veras closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth.
