Longoria powers Rays past Indians
Evan Longoria broke the franchise rookie record for most home runs in a season as the Tampa Bay Rays ended a five-game losing streak to the Cleveland Indians with an 8-4 American League victory on Tuesday.
The Rays improved to 12-6 since the All-Star break and maintained a three-game lead over the Boston Red Sox at the top the American League East.
In Kansas City, Jason Bay had four hits and two RBI's to lead the Red Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Royals.
Bay, who now has a hit in each of his six games with Boston since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Manny Ramirez deal, had a pair of run-scoring doubles and scored two runs. Josh Beckett went just under seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out seven.
At US Cellular Field, Nick Swisher hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the 14th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 10-8 victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Paul Konerko, Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez all homered for the White Sox, who overcame a five-run deficit before extra innings and handed the Tigers their fifth straight loss.
With the win the White Sox opened up a one game lead over the Minnesota Twins at the top of the Central Division, who lost 8-7 to Seattle as Raul Ibanez homered and drove in five runs for the Mariners.
At the Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Chris Waters allowed just one hit in eight innings in his major league debut and Luke Scott homered as the Baltimore Orioles snapped a two-game skid with a 3-0 victory over the West leading Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In Arlington, Josh Hamilton connected on his 27th homer of the season and Chris Davis drove in four runs as the Texas Rangers defeated the New York Yankees 8-6.
Finally, Kevin Mench hit a walk-off single to cap a two-run ninth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays handed the Oakland Athletics their eighth straight loss with a 4-3 triumph.
