Wizards Haywood undergoes surgery

Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood had surgery on his right wrist on Thursday to repair a torn ligament.

The team said that the 28-year-old Haywood will spend the next 10 weeks with a cast on his right hand before beginning his rehabilitation.

Haywood, the 20th overall pick of the 2001 draft, injured the wrist during practice on October 2.

The injury was originally diagnosed as a sprain, but two hand specialists examined it the following week and discovered the tear, determining he would miss four to six months.

The 7-foot, 268-pound big man is coming off his best pro season, when he averaged a career-high 10.6 points and 7.2 rebounds while shooting 53 percent from the field.

He also averaged 12.0 points and 6.7 boards during the Wizards' first-round playoff series loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
