Barkley was legally drunk
Tests results have shown Charles Barkley was legally drunk when he was arrested last week on suspicion of DUI.
Tests released Friday by police in Gilbert showed Barkley had a blood-alcohol level of .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.
Barkley, 45, who is an NBA analyst for TNT, was stopped for running a stop sign in his 2005 Infiniti at about 1:30 a.m on December 31 in Old Town Scottsdale, which is just outside Phoenix.
Police administered standard field sobriety tests after the officer detected the odor of liquor.
The controversial and outspoken Barkley was then cited for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor and transported to the East Valley DUI Command Post, where he was given the blood test to determine his alcohol blood contest.
Following his arrest, Barkley released a statement saying he was disappointed he put himself in that position.
Barkley is regularly embroiled in controversy for his outspoken comments. He engaged in a verbal spat with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, telling him to shut up instead of discussing his options when he becomes a free agent in 2010.
James had a terse retort, calling Barkley "stupid."
Barkley also has acknowledged losing millions of dollars on casino gambling, defending his "habit" by saying he has the money and claiming he does not plan to stop.
Barkley was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player in 1993 while with the Phoenix Suns, one of three teams he played for in his 16-year career.
