Sterling covets free agent Iverson

Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling wants Iverson, not so the basketball executives employed by him.

"It's out of our control," complained one Clipper executive this past week. "This is owner-driven."

Sterling was reported to have noted a slowdown in Clippers ticket sales and sees Iverson as a star that can fill the seats, even as a reserve coming off the bench.

However, it is clear that Iverson, a free agent one GM called "our league's Barry Bonds," has never been in Clippers' coach Mike Dunleavy's plans. Dunleavy has set in motion a program to build around shooting guard Eric Gordon and the first overall pick of this year's NBA Draft, Blake Griffin.

Dunleavy does not want a veteran star who can develop into a cancer in the locker room that is known for causing controversy at any given moment. That is the reason the Clippers dealt Zach Randolph for Quentin Richardson this offseason.

But it seems that the stage is being set for Iverson's arrival.

"I LOVE AI," Clipper guard Baron Davis chimed in on his Twitter page. "He is TOP 50 ... he would be a great vet for our young guys to learn from."

Only if they want to learn how to hog the ball and take questionable shots, Baron.
