NBA All-Stars Game: As it happened
East beat West 141-139 to claim the 59th All-Star game! The impressive Dwyane Wade wins MVP award.
9:25AM: I’m back! And this time it’s the NBA All-Star game. Looking forward to this game-- definitely will be lots of fun. But not gonna lie, I thought I was watching a fashion show before they announced the players. Usher performing wearing a Batman-like vest. And then the all-stars rising from the smoke. Honestly, I was almost expecting them to put on angel wings and strut their stuff.
Here are the line up folks:
East All- Star Starters: Dwyane Wade, Allen Iverson, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett Reserves: Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Paul Pierce, Chris Bosh, Gerald Wallace, Joe Johnson, Al Horford, David Lee (replaces Iverson)
West All-Star Starters: Kobe Bryant (injured, Dirk Nowitzki to start instead), Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan Reserves: Deron Williams, Chauncey Billups (replaces Chris Paul), Pau Gasol, Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Zach Randolph, Chris Kaman (replaces Brandon Roy), Jason Kidd (replaces Kobe Bryant)
9:37AM: Ok, Canadian national anthem. No comment. But I do promise to try to keep the Texas and country music jokes to a minimum. I’ll start with this, though: as an American, I really don’t like listening to the “Star Spangled Banner” sung with a twang.
9:47AM: Thanks, Dirk for your "everything is bigger in Texas" comment. So I don't know which coast to root for. I've spent most of my life in the east coast, BUT I'm a Lakers fan and have spent the past four years on the west coast.
9:53AM: I'm a Steve Nash fan. I think he's fantastic. In the NBA that is dominated with large egos, Nash has always flown under the radar. And do I really need to comment on his skills? I think his back-to-back MVP awards speak for themselves. Also he won the skills challenge yesterday. BALLER!
10:11AM: So this game isn't that exciting. Maybe it's because I don't see a Kobe-Lebron showdown.
Score: West 34 - 37 East (end of first quarter)
10:17AM: "I'm Yours" cover by Nota. I'm sure they're fabulous live, but on TV I'm just bored and unimpressed.
10:23AM: I think I find these preformances during the TOs and commerical breaks more amusing. At first I thought it was a limbo contest, but it's sadly not. There's some girl doing a balance beam routine with Cirque du Soleil jumps on a pipe.
10:29AM: Props to David Lee! Good play for the east AND he's the first Knick to play in an All-Star game since 2001??!
10:31AM: Dwyane Wade has had 4 dunks. I think that should be a good indication of the kind of game this is.
10:35AM: Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. (That's a whole lot of blonde.)
10:36AM: This game is messy. It's like watching a real NBA game for 5 seconds each minute and then it's a mess. Lebron amazing dunk... steal... bad pass... missed layup... yawn.
10:40AM: Also, Dirk, I get that you may think that everything is bigger in Texas. But the Texas crowd is not into this game either. They just seem to care about Dirk and maybe, sometimes Kevin Durant. Even back-to-back dunks by the east and west not impressive enough.
Score: West 69 - 76 East (end of first half)
10:52AM: HALFTIME SHOW! Sorry, folks, the Who isn't performing, but Shakira is. She's wearing a bathing suit with feathers and singing the wolf song. Definite upgrade from that Nota group.
11:00AM: Enter Alicia Keys. She's rockin' it. Now she's singing Empire State of Mind. I'm really hoping Jay-Z will pop out now. Instead she has decided to change the words to the song and say "Welcome to All-Star"... Sad, so close to not ruining this performance.
11:19AM: Welcome back to the mess. Carmelo Anthony is leading with 17 points for the West. Lebron leads the East with 11.
11:25AM: Dwight Howard is all over the place. In a good way! Really, though. We was going for the three pointers in the first half, and now he's all over the paint. This is what's great about the All-Star game. But sadly, no one else got that memo.
11:32AM: Nash has a field goal! To go with his 11 assists. He's too good!
11:36AM: Beer belly alert. I have no words, really. Fat men and skinny cheerleaders dancing. Interesting choice of entertainment.
11:42AM: 15 fast break points for the East. Ridiculous. Where's the defense? Never in an All-Star game.
11:45AM: So 108,713 Texans are really not making that much noise. I'm disappointed and actually a little surprised. Longhorns fans seem to make more noise than these folks in Arlington. Sorry, Dirk. But it is a world record-- largest attendance for a basketball game.
11:51AM: Who is keeping score? I feel like this game is like when I play tennis with... anyone, really. Who even bothers to keep score? What's the point? It's not like they're getting paid to play like this. Oh wait...
Score: West 109 - 118 East (end of third quarter)
11:57AM: Finally a play that could be seen in the NBA. (Notice I said play. Yes there are been amazing shots and dunks, but very few plays.) Lovely passing by the West in the paint. West are creeping back.
12:00PM: I wish I could make this up. But mascots for the teams are dancing. And doing the "Single Ladies" dance. I really couldn't make this up if I tried.
12:09PM: For those keeping score. Tied at 124.
12:10PM: Rajon Rondo has had a quiet night until now. Amazing steal to Dwyane Wade for the oop!
12:15PM: Dwyane Wade dunk count: 7. RIDICULOUS. According to Carmelo Anthony, he doesn't like losing. I imagine that none of these players like losing. This might explain why in the last three minutes of the game, it seems like a real game of basketball-- professional basketball.
12:22PM: My guess for MVP: Dwyane Wade.
12:33PM: All tied up at 139 with 7.7seconds. Hometown fave Dirk made two free throws to make it even.
12:35PM: Chris Bosh fouled... Made both free throws. With 5 seconds left in the game, the West are down by 2.
12:38PM: East holds on to win the 59th All-Star game! In summary, that was really boring until the last 5 minutes. No need to rewatch the game.
12:41PM: I called it! Dwyane Wade wins MVP! Ok, folks, stay tuned for the highlights and recap on your favorite sports news website espnstar.com and news channel ESPN.
