NBA superstar Kobe Bryant has signed a three-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, keeping him with the team until 2014.

The 31-year-old, who has won four NBA titles with the Lakers, had the option to become a free agent this summer but has finally agreed terms after a season-long negotiating process. The year remaining on his current contract will run its course before the new deal kicks in.

No financial details were released, but reports suggested it could be worth up to US dollars 90 million.

"We are extremely pleased that we were able to reach an agreement and come to terms on the extension at this time," said Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak.

"Kobe has been a cornerstone of the Lakers for well over a decade, helping to lead us to four NBA Championships and in the process developing into one of the greatest players in basketball history."

The 12-time NBA All-Star, who led the United States to Olympic gold in Beijing two years ago, has been with the Lakers since 1996, having been drafted that year by Charlotte and then traded.

In 70 games this season, Bryant is averaging 27.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 38.8 minutes.
