Bertuzzi, Moore meet for first time since attack
Calgary Flames left wing Todd Bertuzzi and his legal team recently met with the man he brutally attacked, Steve Moore, in an effort to resolve an ongoing lawsuit.
The Calgary Herald reported the two sides met in Toronto on Monday. The newspaper reported that former Vancouver Canucks coach Marc Crawford and Orca Bay, the former owners of the Canucks, were also represented in the meeting.
It was the first face-to-face meeting since Bertuzzi ambushed Moore in 2004 during a game between the Canucks and Colorado Avalanche.
Moore was attacked from behind by Bertuzzi and suffered a neck fracture, facial lacerations and a concussion, injuries that ultimately ended his career.
The incident sent shockwaves through the sports world, and the NHL responded by suspending Bertuzzi for the remainder of the regular season and the entire Stanley Cup playoffs that season.
Bertuzzi was charged with assault in June 2004, and sentenced to community service and one year of probation after pleading guilty. He was suspended by the league and reinstated after 17 months - time that also included the 2004-05 lockout.
Moore is seeking $38 million for lost income and damages. Bertuzzi filed a third-party claim, saying that Crawford should be responsible for any damages awarded to Moore.
Bertuzzi claims that Crawford ordered him to retaliate against Moore for a hit on then-Vancouver captain Markus Naslund two weeks earlier.
The Herald reported that neither Bertuzzi's nor Moore's lawyers spoke to reporters afterward.
