Canucks sign Sundin
Highly sought after free-agent Mats Sundin has signed with the Vancouver Canucks after months of anticipation.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks," said Sundin, who was also considering playing for the New York Rangers.
"Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank (general manager) Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process."
The Canucks, who had plenty of salary cap space compared to the Rangers, added an experienced offensive weapon. Vancouver (18-11-3), which has been without goaltender Roberto Luongo for the last month, is still tied with the Calgary Flames (18-11-3) atop the Northwest Division.
Sundin could join the team's top line with fellow Swedes Henrik and Daniel Sedin, giving the Canucks one of the most talented trios in the league.
"We are very excited to have Mats join the Vancouver Canucks," Gillis said. "Playing previously in two Canadian markets and consistently being among team and league leaders in scoring, Mats has proven that he can excel under pressure. He adds a wealth of experience, leadership and skill to the Canucks."
