Hurricanes slide continues

The Carolina Hurricanes slumped to their eighth consecutive defeat with a 6-1 reverse at the Philadelphia Flyers.

Braydon Coburn score twice for the Flyers who ended their own two-game losing run.

Jeff Tambellini scored a hat-trick as the New York Islanders shutout the Buffalo Sabres 5-0. Islanders goaltender Martin Biron stopped 38 shots en route to his 200th career win.

Atlanta Thrashers goaltender Ondrej Pavelec enjoyed an even better night, making 50 saves to inspire his team to a 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators.

The Montreal Canadiens allowed two late goals to force overtime, but regrouped to claim a 5-4 win following a shootout against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mike Cammalleri and Scott Gomez scored the goals in the shootout to secure the win.

Reigning champions the Pittsburgh Penguins were stunned 2-1 at home to the struggling Minnesota Wild while the Boston Bruins shutout the Edmonton Oilers 2-0.

The Florida Panthers' goal was also unbreached in a 4-0 win at the St Louis Blues.

The Phoenix Coyotes claimed a third consecutive win by beating the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 while the Nashville Predators have also strung together the same streak by beating the Dallas Stars 4-2.

The Detroit Red Wings overcame the Calgary Flames 3-1 and the New Jersey Devils won 2-1 at Tampa Bay Lightning.
