Giguere defies Devils on debut

Debutant goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere produced a 30-shot shut-out as the Toronto Maple Leafs stunned NHL Atlantic Division leaders New Jersey Devils 3-0.

Giguere arrived alongside defenseman Dion Phaneuf and forward Fredrik Sjostrom in two Sunday trade deals and wasted no time in making an impact.

Goals from Nikolai Kulemin, Phil Kessel and Francois Beauchemin sank the Devils - and Eastern Conference play-off rivals Washington Capitals took full advantage with a 4-1 win over Boston Bruins.

Brooks Laich, Mike Knuble, Boyd Gordon and Alex Ovechkin fired the Capitals to an 11th straight win after David Krejci had put Boston ahead.

Montreal beat Canadian rivals Vancouver Canucks 3-2 as goalie Jaroslav Halak starred with 45 saves.

Sergei Kostitsyn, Maxim Lapierre and Tomas Plekanec scored the goals as the Canadiens ended a seven-match winning run for Vancouver, for whom Mikael Samuelsson and Ryan Kesler scored on power-plays.

But San Jose Stars failed to take advantage of play-off rivals Vancouver's defeat as they went down 4-2 to Detroit. Derek Meech and Patrick Eaves scored in the final period to earn the Red Wings victory.

Ilya Bryzgalov made 25 saves and then kept out nine of 10 efforts in a shoot-out as Adrian Aucoin grabbed the decider for Phoenix Coyotes following a scoreless draw with Nashville Predators.

Brandon Yip and Ryan O'Reilly scored twice apiece - TJ Galiardi claiming assists on each occasion - as Colorado Avalanche beat Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1, while Dallas goalie Marty Turco made 40 saves to help the Stars to a 4-2 win over Minnesota Wild.

Tampa Bay Lightning beat Atlanta Thrashers 2-1 and Los Angeles Lakers saw off New York Rangers by the same scoreline.
