Kings smother Colorado Avalanche

The Los Angeles Kings claimed a 4-3 overtime victory over the Colorado Avalanche thanks to Drew Doughty's slap shot.

T.J. Galiardi had levelled for Colorado with 6.6 seconds remaining in the third period after Ryan Smyth put the Kings in front.

The Kings' other goals came from Smyth and Wayne Simmonds. Chris Stewart and Peter Mueller also tallied for the Avalanche.

The Ottawa Senators took sole possession of fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens.

Brian Elliott claimed his fifth career shutout with 29 saves while Erik Karlsson scored one and assisted Peter Regin for the other.

In the day's other game, the Detroit Red Wings beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in a repeat match-up of last year's Stanley Cup final.
